**Mexico City, May 16, 2023**
Today, the Google News Initiative (GNI) announced the launch of its Digital Growth Program in Mexico, a comprehensive training and support program designed to help local news organizations accelerate their digital transformation and build sustainable business models.
The program will provide Mexican newsrooms with tailored training, mentorship, and resources to help them develop and implement digital strategies, improve their audience engagement, and generate new revenue streams. It will also connect them with a network of experts and peers to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing.
“Mexico is a vibrant and dynamic media landscape, but local news organizations face challenges in adapting to the digital age,” said Carla Zanoni, head of the Google News Initiative in Latin America. “Our Digital Growth Program is designed to provide them with the tools and support they need to succeed in the digital environment and continue serving their communities with high-quality journalism.”
The program will be delivered in partnership with the University of Texas at Austin’s Moody College of Communication and the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ). It will include a combination of online and in-person training sessions, as well as ongoing mentorship and support.
“We are excited to partner with GNI on this important initiative,” said Dean Jay Bernhardt, Moody College of Communication. “Our faculty and staff have extensive experience in helping news organizations navigate the challenges of digital transformation, and we are committed to supporting the growth and success of local journalism in Mexico.”
“ICFJ is proud to be part of this program that will empower Mexican news organizations to thrive in the digital age,” said ICFJ President Joyce Barnathan. “Access to quality journalism is essential for a healthy democracy, and we believe that this program will make a significant contribution to ensuring that Mexicans have access to the news and information they need.”
The Digital Growth Program is part of GNI’s ongoing commitment to supporting journalism around the world. GNI has invested more than $300 million in journalism training and innovation programs since its launch in 2018.
