This weekend Novak Djokovic took on Daniil Medvedev in the men’s final at the US Open, which meant famous actors were inserted in the see-and-be-seen seats and tasked with going “ooh” and “aah” until someone (Djokovic) emerged victorious. Poor Timothée Chalamet was so tense that Kylie Jenner had to scratch the back of his head as though he were an anxious sight hound.
Tabloids first reported that Jenner and Chalamet were a thing in April. The fashion obsessives reportedly met through designer Haider Ackermann and publicly confirmed their romance when they were filmed kissing at a Beyoncé concert. The unlikely pairing has triggered a psychic break in the Chalamet standom. One fan account posted an Instagram that read: “If you’re feeling distressed by the video, it’s OK. But please take care of yourself. Step away from social media for a couple of days.”
It seems some people are disillusioned by the idea of Elio (Chalamet’s sensitive, soulful, and entirely fictional character in Call Me by Your Name) falling for a reality-TV star. But in the tradition of a great number of other nascent couples, the duo are beginning to telegraph their togetherness through clothing—i.e., sitting side by side at the back of the VIP box in all-black outfits with matching rectangular sunglasses. Though Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner have yet to reach Kravis levels of statement making, these ensembles are best read as a touch-free PDA: a way to literally wear each other in public.
