California Walmart shooting: 6 dead, including gunman, in Chesapeake store

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A gunman opened fire inside a Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia, Tuesday night, killing six people before turning the gun on himself, police said..

The shooting happened around 10:12 p.m. at the Walmart Supercenter on Sam’s Circle in Chesapeake, a city of about 250,000 people located just south of Norfolk..

Police said the gunman was a Walmart employee and opened fire inside the store. Chesapeake Police Chief Mark Solesky said at a news conference early Wednesday that the gunman was found dead inside the store from a self-inflicted gunshot wound..

Solesky said six other people were killed in the shooting, including five who died at the scene and one who died at a local hospital. He said the victims ranged in age from 16 to 70 years old..

The Walmart store where the shooting occurred is located in a busy shopping area near several other businesses and restaurants. The store was closed after the shooting and police cordoned off the area..

Solesky said police are still investigating the motive for the shooting. He said the gunman had been employed at the store for several years and had no history of violence or workplace issues..
