U.N. expects more countries to follow suit as momentum grows for global plastics treaty

Momentum has grown in recent months to forge a global plastics treaty, with 140 nations backing a U.N. proposal, as the number of countries banning or taxing single-use plastic bags and other products rises.

U.N. Environment Assembly (UNEA) officials said they expect more countries to join the 140 that have so far backed the plan, which aims to create a global plastics treaty that would include legally binding mandates on reducing plastic pollution.
