Tessa Thompson, well-known fashion maverick, has done it again. The Westworld actor was pictured out and about in Los Angeles wearing pants—sorry, scratch that—wearing a skirt with a front slit and a print that looks like pants. The French term for the optical illusion is trompe l’oeil, which literally translates to “trick of the eye,” and I do, indeed, feel tricked. Or trompée, if I’m feeling fancy.
The skirt appears to be a version of Jean Paul Gaultier’s illusion denim pants skirt, but this is unconfirmed. The skirt appears to be a lot of things, TBH, so who even knows.
Cheekiness is standard when it comes to Thompson’s personal style, and she’s leaning hard into maximalism with this whole look. She paired the illusion skirt with a billowing olive tank worn over a brown turtleneck with crocodile boots, oversized satchel, and flower petal sunglasses. Why not.
The pants skirt was not the only optical illusion fashion moment Tessa Thompson served this week. She attended the in a sequined flesh-colored gown that gave the definite impression of nudity. Is that the actor’s actual booty we’re seeing in the pics she posted to Instagram, or is it just more couture trickery? She captioned the post, “What A.I might wear to the function when they are after flesh,” so make of that what you will.

From Kim Kardashian entering her “futuristic alien Barbie” era to Julia Fox’s whole deal, the celebrities are really having a wild time with personal style these days. I may be confused, slightly uncomfortable, and fascinated—but I don’t think I’m mad at it.
